In the eighteenth century, Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar invited master weavers to her capital. They found inspiration in the fort’s carved jalis, temple spires, river steps and changing light.
The result was the Maheshwari saree—recognisable by reversible borders, geometric motifs and rare weightlessness.
